The Gentleman is in an elaborate coat and long white wig and what might be shoulder epaulet's, painted in enamels on a ruby flash ground, within an engraved and gilt laurel wreath. The portrait is hand painted on a red colored ruby glass disk that are then applied to the bottoms of clear glass concave crystal glass salt cellar. The concave shape of the cellar creates a unique optical effect typical of these types of cellars. Given that salt was an expensive condiment and commissioned hand painted portraiture a rarity it can be assumed that these gifts were intended for and given by those of substantial means. This lead crystal Salt Cellar measures 3” by 2 1/4” by 1 1/4” in height and is quite heavy given their size. The condition is good and commiserate with age and 200 years of use ware. Some light scratches and some tiny chips to corners but nothing serious.
