Description: MAN ON BARREL KEG FRENCH MAJOLICA TOBY JUG Antique Bottle Decanter Pitcher c1890 #1 This is a French MAJOLICA MAN ON A BARREL DECANTER, Antique Bottle Keg TOBY JUG circa 1890. This Majolica MAN ON A BARREL is modeled in deep relief; the hand painting, décor and glaze are very well done. The man has stringy hair and a moustache, is holding a cup and jug,; he is nattily dressed in period garb. This MAN ON BARREL FRENCH MAJOLICA TOBY JUG: - Includes full body figure of a whimsical French Faience MAN ASTRIDE A BARREL; - has CALLIGRAPHY on the front and rear of the barrel, “XXX / VIIII”- probably the indication of a hogshead barrel of spirits, 53 gallons; - has a rounded stove-pipe type hat that forms the top spout; - is decorated with stylized accents, and a typical palette of French Majolica, including a creamy white background decorated with sage green, blue, yellow, manganese brown and orange; - the base foot is unglazed. The estimated date is early 20th Century, circa 1920 or earlier. This MAN ON BARREL FRENCH MAJOLICA DECANTER Bottle Keg TOBY JUG is in good condition with an old but well done restoration to the top front of the top hat 1 in. x ¾ in., a rim chip/fret 3/8 in., and various glaze losses, including to the tips of both shoes. Otherwise, condition status includes normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no other apparent repairs or restorations. It is noted that old French Majolica is not inherently "perfect" - larger pieces were mold formed by hand in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. This isn't damage- this is part of the history of old majolica pottery and how it was made. This item is sold as is, as described. Please see all photos which are a part of this description.
