Jonathan Dickinson Sergeant (1746-1793) was an American politician who served as a member of the Provincial Congress of New Jersey from 1774 to 1776, member of the committee that drafted the Constitution of NJ in 1776, NJ delegate to the Second Continental Congress in 1776 and 1777, and Pennsylvania Attorney General from 1777 to 1780. REVOLUTIONARY WAR-DATED DOCUMENT SIGNED BY THE PENNSYLVANIA ATTORNEY GENERAL CHARGING A WOMAN WITH FORNICATION THAT PRODUCED A BASTARD CHILD Revolutionary War-dated document signed by, “Jonathan Sergeant, Atty. Gen.,” charging Isabella Hardisty with, “Fornication with a certain Person unknown and did permit the same Person unknown then and there to beget a Bastard Child on the Body of her the said Isabella Hardisty contrary to an Act of General Assembly of this Province of Pennsylvania in such Case made and Provided and against the peace and Dignity of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and so forth.” Contains one page with docketing on the verso, measures 10 by 8.25 inches, created in [Philadelphia] in January 1779, and in good condition with paper loss and separations along the folds, some having been repaired on the verso with archival tape.
