The first four submarines in the class were converted into cruise missile submarines (SSGNs) due to treaty restrictions after entering service. These submarines have the largest displacement of any submarines in Western countries and are the largest in terms of overall length and the number of submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) carried among active submarines. The primary mission of the Ohio-class submarines is to patrol beneath the ocean's surface and, in the event of a nuclear missile launch against the United States or the potential for such a launch, respond by launching nuclear missiles at the adversary. As a result, after departing their homeports, they navigate to their designated patrol areas and remain submerged, ready to respond to a missile launch with their own missiles. The duration of these patrols was approximately 60 days with the earlier Lafayette-class submarines, but with the Ohio-class submarines being larger and offering improved living conditions, the patrol duration has increased to approximately 70 to 90 days.
