SCHAFER & VATER ANTIQUE CERAMIC MATCH HOLDER STRIKER MR MICAWBER DECORATED #11 Stamped on the base with marks for Schafer and Vater, the German manufacturer famous for their novelty ceramics, mostly produced 1920s 1930. From what I can deduce, this was a match holder – they poked into the holes in the back. The unglazed strip at the bottom of the back was used to strike the match, and the small trough at the front held the used matches. The decoration is of Mr Micawber, shown holding his cane and monocle. Very unusual – I can’t find anything similar. May well have been specially produced for a tavern or store with the eponymous name. Approx 12.5 cms tall, very good condition with no damage. There are lots of S & V collectors around; someone may like to add this to their collection. My Items The items I sell are vintage; they are second hand, old, sometimes very old.
