When walking with oboe reeds is best to keep the reed in a reed case to protect the reed from damage. Carrying the reeds in the reed cup with or without water inside is not recommended as the reed can be damaged quite easily. It is advisable to soak oboe reeds for 2 to 4 minutes. Over soaking the reeds is not advisable, as it can affect the quality and response of the oboe reeds and shorten the lifespan of the reed. It is advisable to soak only the reeds that will be used in the rehearsal or performance, since placing oversoaked reeds in a reed case can cause the reeds to mold.
