The portrait depicts Sir John Vanbrugh wearing a long curly gray wig, a white cravat, and a brown cloak. He has light brown eyes and his gaze is toward the viewer. The background is mottled brown and black. Frame Description: gilded wooden molding with raised clamshell, acanthus leaf and floret motif. A brass plate attached lower middle is engraved “Sir Godfrey Kneller 1646 – 1723” Media Description: Oil painting Sir Godfrey Kneller studied under Rembrandt van Rijn in Amsterdam. Eventually, after traveling and studying in Europe, he settled in England where he Anglicized his name. He became an official portrait artist to the British monarchy. In 1692, he was made a Knight by King William III. In 1700, he was made a Knight of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Leopold. In 1715, he was made a Baronet by King George I.
