Their 3600 horsepower was produced by a mighty 20-cylinder 645E3 engine which only the SD45-series Diesels offered: SD45, SDP45 and SDP45X. Southern Pacific’s SDP45’s were used primarily in passenger service for which they were designed. Distinguishing features include the extra-long frame required to house a train heating compartment at the rear of the hood, brakewheel set in a recessed cutaway on the side of the nose, extra-large fuel tank, large flaring radiators, snow plow and small icicle- breakers on the roof to protect glass on vista-dome passenger cars.
