Description: Check this handsome chap out! What an absolute UNIT of a saw! During WW1 Spear and Jackson, along with almost all other manufacturers were forced to dial back the extravagance they would normally put in to their products, if it wasn't totally nessesary it got left out, if it could be made cheaper it would be. Brass was almost impossible to source as the military required it all for shell cases and as such S&J were forced to use Steel for their handle hardware, the extravagant and beautiful decorative etch you'd normally expect to see on the plate was an unnessesary and labour intensive process that could be avoided and replaced with a simple struck stamp to indicate the saw was one of theirs, interestingly, the 'war years' saws are, with exception of aniversary and commemorative saws, the only examples that I'm aware of to bear the date of manufacture, it's almost as if they were saying "There'd normally be an etching here but there's a war on, sorry" Someting that I find facinating about this saw though is the handle, Whilst it's a tamed down and less flamboyant take on the London pattern handle than their pre-war offerings, it's still a beautifully excecuted example of a rather graceful design, this speaks volumes as to how highly S&J valued their product, Yes, there's a war on. Yes, We'll make it quicker and cheaper. No, we won't send out an inferior product. And that's exactly how this saw feels, it's a brute of a tool, it's big, heavy, purposefull and does exactly what it came to do, rip down thick boards with absolutely no time wasted, yet somehow it's still has a certain refinement and grace that you'd expect from a saw of that era. Overall the saw is in remarkable condition, The plate is huge, almost full size, the toothline is fantastic, gently progressing from somewhere around 4½tpi at the toe to 3tpi at the heel which makes the saw both easy to get started and impressively fast in the cut. I've jointed out a bit of a belly and hand sharpened the teeth, I set them using a hammer set so only the tips of the teeth are set which is by far the best method for coarse tooth patterns. The handle is quarter sawn English Beech with a beautiful patina, I've given it some Linseed oil to enhance the finish, The hardware has been cleaned up and given a black oxide finish which I believe to be accurate to original. It's plate is arrow straight and in remarkable condition for a 107 year old saw, ironically the only marks on the plate are most likely caused by the residue of linseed oil applied to the plate to protect it from rust, you'll notice it's cleaner around the handle where the buildup was thicker before we cleaned it up, the oppposite of most saws we see. In use, this brute is actually very well behaved, It starts easily and makes unvelievably quick progress through the wood, I tested it in some 2" Beech and, honestly, it was a joy to use, the stream of sawdust it produces is coarse and plentiful. To give a balanced and honest listing I usually look for any negative things i could point out and, there are a couple of minor things i can mention, neither of them anything other than minor flaws. 1) there is some very slight pitting near the toe, see pics. 2) There is a little hole in the underside of the handle, it could possibly be a worm hole so i dosed it with permetherin and microwaved it whilst it was in bits just incase.
