Description: I'm pleased to offer this specimen of Sphalerite with Pyrite, Galena and Quartz from the 500 meter level, Eduardo vein, "Real del Monte mine", Mineral del Monte, Hidalgo, Mexico. The specimen measures 3.68 x 2.20 x 2.35 inches or 9.35 x 5.60 x 5.96cm and is accompanied by its original ore sample bag. This is from the Erich Laskowski (1949-2020) collection of Tucson, Arizona. Erich worked as a geologist and amassed a huge collection of personally collected specimens (rich in ore specimens) and purchased species (largely from online auction sites). I acquired the bulk of his personally collected specimens in April, 2021. This specimen is one of the very few Mexican ore specimens in his collection. I put "Real de Monte mine" in quotations as I could find no reference to any such mine in the Real/Mineral de Monte district in Hidalgo State. There was a "Compania de Real Del Monte y Pachuca" that operated underground mines in the district and I'm certain that this piece is from one of the company mines. From 1973-1981, the mining company produced over 24 million ounces of silver and over 130 thousand ounces of gold! The district is one of the largest silver producing districts in the world. Most of the silver minerals in the district are not visible to the naked eye and are found as inclusions associated with other sulfides in quartz veins--exactly as seen in this specimen. Acanthite is the main silver mineral present in the ores. Please check my feedback and my other eBay items.
