Description: This document is an 1891 tax receipt for taxes that were collected in the small town of Springwater, in Livingston County, New York. The populationof Springwater was about 2000 at that time. The receipt was made out to a Mrs. Charles Stratton. This was Mary Caroline Glover Stratton (1856-1919). Her husband was Charles N. Stratton (1847-1883)(his last name was also spelled "Stratten "). Mary laterremarried to a man named Albert D. Curtis (1839-1916). This receipt was signed by someone named H. A. Wiley. This was most likely Henry Aldrich Wiley (1835-1911),who served for the Union Army as a Lieutenant Colonelduring the Civil War, and who was born in Springwater,and died there at the age of seventy-five. He was takenas a prisoner of war in 1864, and lost part of his handin one of the battles in which he fought. Lt. Col. Wileywas a member of Company B of the 104th regimentof New York Volunteers. The document is about 7" by 3", and is in good condition, with some creases, some soiling onthe reverse side, and other wear. Shipping is FREE within the USA via USPS First Class Mail.
