Invited by Hugh James Rose in March 1831 to write on the councils of the church, Newman by August was planning three or more volumes: 'What light would be thrown on the Nicene Confession merely by explaining it article by article? to understand it, it must be prefaced by a sketch of the rise of the Arian heresy' which he completed on 31 July 1832 (Ker, biography, p. 42-46) -- Between 1834-39 Newman wanted to rewrite this work (in 1842-44 he issued an annotated translation of Select treatises of S. Athanasius.in controversy with the Arians) but in 1854 merely authorized a literal reprinting. -- He wrote to Dean Church in August 1870 'I am sending out a new edition of my 'Arians.' Did I touch its structure, it would come to pieces, so I am doing nothing but removing some of the imperfections of style, and adding (a very) few notes. Shipped with USPS Media Mail.
