Description: The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 is an 1826 historical romantic novel by James Fenimore Cooper. It is the second book of his Leatherstocking Tales series and the best known to contemporary audiences. The novel was first published in 1826 by Carey & Lea, of Philadelphia. The Last of the Mohicans is set in 1757, during the French and Indian War (the North American theater of the Seven Year’s War), when France and Great Britain battled for control of North America. Over time the book grew to be regarded by some as the first Great American Novel and was James Fenimore Cooper's most popular work. It has influenced popular opinion about American Indians and the frontier period of eastern American history. The romanticized images of the strong, fearless, and ever-resourceful frontiersman, as well as the stoic, wise, and noble "red man,” were notions derived from Cooper's characterizations more than from anywhere else. The phrase, "the last of the Mohicans,” has come to represent the sole survivor of a noble race or type. Scribner’s publishing triumph in 1911 was to retain America’s foremost illustrator, N.C. Wyeth, to create a series of vivid paintings to accompany the text initially of Treasure Island. This book had great sales success and began a series, Scribner’s “Illustrated Classics, which were issued almost annually for the next twenty years. Wyeth would illustrate 16 of these “Illustrated Classics” during this time period. These volumes, including this edition of “The Last of the Mohicans,” were typically quarto-sized hardcovers bound in black cloth with a pictorial plate on the front cover. This volume combines a great historical romantic story, with remarkable illustrations, and showcases an American publishing innovation and success.
