GerrieVan Baren has been painting since 1996 as a non-speaking Down Syndrome savant who expresses himself through his art. He has been exhibiting since 2002. Gerrie Van Baren predominantly works with pen and East Indian ink on paper. In his drawings, Van Baren makes abundant use of ink. He often uses Indian ink and combine this with colored ink and pencils. Still, the artist preserves an amazing control over his subject, creating powerful dark compositions. Apart from his pen and ink drawings, Van Baren makes acrylic paintings. After sketching in pencil on linen, he works out the design of his paintings with acrylic or acrylic ink. The finishing touch, however, is done with the reed pen, the favorite tool of this talented artist, Since 1996, Van Baren developed his artistic skills at the outsider art studio of Kunst & Vliegwerk in Leiden, the Netherlands. For non-speaker Van Baren, his art is the most important means of expression. He's a highly motivated and disciplined artist, who has worked full time on his art since 2002. He sticks to his subjects. Over long periods of time, after periods of drawing and painting sports, musicians, animals , Van Baren has recently begun to devote his art to clowns. Gerrie has participated in several exhibitions throughout the Netherlands. In 2004 was the first time that his work was shown in New York at Outsider Art Fair. He shows his work in several group exhibitions. A lot of collectors and admirers are very interested in his work. His group of collectors is still growing.
