uncommon low profile Sargent No 44 handled wood floor scraper plane

Description: You are bidding on one Sargent Number 44 wood scraper plane as pictured. There are some condition issues, including the blade is from a Number 42, so please keep reading.Sargent made 3 versions of the handled scraper plane -- the 42 which doesn't have the wood sole, the 43 which has the wood sole, and the much less common 44 which has the wood sole, an enlarged throat opening in the wood sole, and a much lower profile. The 44 was made from 1922 to 1943 only, while the 42 and 43 were made from 1910 to 1943. Please see Dave Heckel's excellent book Sargent Planes Value and Identification Guide Second Edition for much more information about these. If you look at the side views, you can see that this sits much lower than the typical scraper plane. There is only about 1-1/8" between the lowest point on the handle and the surface that it is sitting on. It is marked "SARGENT" on the body outside of the throat, and "44" which is harder to see under the handle. The brass screws and washers are not marked.The blade is marked "SARGENT V-B-M No 42" on both sides. That blade came to me with the plane, so it might be the original blade, but to be proper the plane should have a blade marked 44. The blade is about 2-7/8" in width, and almost exactly 5" in length. The throat is supposed to have a much larger opening on the Number 44. The throat on this plane looks like at least one edge has been opened up even more. The brass screws holding the wood sole are proper.Condition is otherwise good. The japanning has some rust showing through it, and the brass nuts and the brass screw that secures the blade all have some modest tarnish. The wood handle shows wear with some scratches and dings. The blade has some scattered patina (color) and light rust, and a few spots of very light pitting.Except as noted, there are no cracks or chips or chunks missing from any of the castings, and everything operates properly. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it's not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20" long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30" long, because those longer packages won't fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, eBay requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including eBay. If I ship to a state where eBay is required to collect sales tax, eBay will charge you the sales tax for your location.
