Description: This beautiful little cabinet vase was crisply carved with a band of stylized acorns and covered in a green and brown matte glaze by Julia Mattson while working at the University of North Dakota School of Mines. Marks include the circular ink stamp and incised 9JM3292. Circa 1928-37. Height 3 inches. FYI: Julia Edna Mattson was born in Kensington, Minnesota on October 28th, 1893. She worked at UND 1924-1963. In an astounding feat of work, ethic, and talent, it has been calculated that Mattson made over 4,400 models from 1927-1938 (see note below). When Ms. Mattson retired in 1963, the famous cobalt blue seal, that had been in use since the early years of the Ceramics department, was retired. Mattson moved to California after her retirement and died on December 16th,1967 in Los Angeles. NOTE: Need to date a piece of UND pottery, then every collector of UND pottery should have in their library a copy of my friend Ken Forster’s very informative book “University of North Dakota Pottery a history and comparative study,” copyright 2004, hardcover, illustrated, 224 pp. CONDITION: Excellent original condition. No chips, cracks, scratches or restorations. YOU CAN ALWAYS MAKE AN OFFER?
