USA Poster Stamp - Jewel Food Stores "History of Chicagoland" #89

Description: [zipedit] USA Publicity Poster Stamp Publicity poster stamp issued by the Jewel Food Stores of Chicago in 1939. They issued 100 different stamps, each with a different image on the theme of "The History of Chicagoland" and a collectors album was also issued. The stamps were distributed to customers at their grocery stores, based on a complicated schedule. Of the 100 stamps, 20 of them were "Star Stamps" and were distributed more selectively. (Although all of the stamps could be acquired directly from the company). These stamps were announced in the December, 1938 issue of "The Poster Stamp Bulletin", with a long description of how they would be distributed, starting on January 2, 1939. There was a follow-up story in the February, 1939 issue of "The Poster Stamp Bulletin", reporting that the stamps and albums were released to the public on January 5th, and that the program was so popular and successful, that the entire print run of albums, 100,000 of them, was exhausted in only three days! (NOTE: The Poster Stamp Bulletin can be viewed on the website known as Alphabetilately.org) The story of these stamps is also published in James Drummond's "Catalog of Philatelic Miscellany", Volume 1. This is stamp number 89 - and it is one of the "star stamps" - depicting "The First Automobile - 1904". It is listed as Drummond #GSJFC89. This stamp is F/VF, OG, NH. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such). Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs. A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described. * A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item.
