Description: GENE AMMONS/SONNY STITT/BROTHER JACK McDUFF: Soul Summit. Used stereo LP in Near Mint/Near Mint condition. Prestige Records Catalog # 7454; reissue of 1966 album Condition: Vinyl superior to typical LPs. Packaging has just two minor flaws: my own handwritten note (made before I decided to sell my LPs) on back of jacket that surfaces are very good, and my notation of total playing times for the two sides in the track listings. Behind the Music: Prestige Records is part of “The Fantasy Family of Labels.” Very active in realm of Jazz, they recorded sessions with Miles Davis and John Coltrane (in same Miles quintet) before those artists got huge. This album is aptly titled. Gene ‘Jug’ Ammons was one of those purveyors of a “big soulful” sound on tenor saxophone. Sonny Stitt was equally adept on tenor and alto sax (here he sticks to tenor). He is revered among aficionados of the music, though not as well known as Coltrane, another Sonny (Rollins by name), etc. And ‘Brother’ Jack McDuff was one of the great organists. They are joined for these sessions by veteran drummer Charlie Persip. That’s it, no bass, no guitarist. The compositions are largely originals, supplemented by “When You Wish Upon a Star” from Disney’s animated Snow White. Yes, everything is fair game for Jazzers! Original sessions were “supervised” by Esmond Edwards and recorded by Rudy Van Gelder. Enjoy this good old “blowing session”!
