Description: This is an amazing replica of the Viking helmet unearthed in Yarm in the 1950s is the first to ever be found in Britain, according to new research. New research has shown that a Viking corroded, damaged helmet unearthed in Yarm, Stockton-on-Tees, in the 1950s is a rare, 10th century Anglo-Scandinavian (Viking) helmet, the first ever found in Britain and only the second nearly complete Viking helmet found in the world. Found in Chapel Yard by workmen digging trenches for new sewerage pipes, the corroded, damaged artefact is a rare, 10th century Anglo-Scandinavian helmet. A research project led by Dr Chris Caple also found it is only the second near-complete Viking helmet found in the world. It has been on display at Preston Park Museum since 2012. Chris Caple, ‘The Yarm Helmet,’ in: Medieval Archaeology Vol. 64.1 (2020), pp. 31-64. This helmet unlike modern copies has correct round ring riveted mail ventail or aventail, not incorrect flat ring mail. Round riveted rings were correct for the Viking Period. The helmet has an adjustable leather lining inside and a hand forged iron buckle for the chinstrap and 14 Guage Steel. Well above your average modern reproductions of this AMAZING find.
