Description: Up for sale is an extremely rare 1928 Ludwig 'Super Ludwig' 14x6.5" Concert Model as shown in the 1928 Ludwig catalog. When I received the drum, it was in need of some TLC. The brass shell had been previously hand painted (with a brush!), the heads were ripped and the wires were damaged. I have since done some light restoration work to get the drum back to a playable condition. The brass shell (the same shell as the original Black Beauty's) has been stripped of the brushed paint which has revealed a beautifully patina'd shell. I believe the drum may have originally been in the 'Ludwigold' speckled finish as there is some remnants of gold around the bearing edges. The plating on the tube lugs and hardware has worn away with age, with some remnants of the original gold plating throughout the drum. There are a few cracks in some of the lugs which I had shown in the photos, the lugs are holding ok but visually you can see them. About half of the internal screws that hold the lugs were non-existent so I have sourced replacement ones which hold the lugs on the shell well. There is one replacement end/guide to one of the lugs which had previously been replaced before I got the drum. On the inside of the drum there is a signature dated with 1944. The original individually adjustable snare wires had seen better days and the rarity of this drum makes it even harder to find new wires that fit. Puresound did make some for a short time however these are now discontinued. Thankfully, a new replacement set has been made courtesy of Bibin Wires and they fit the drum beautifully meaning this is now a very useable and playable drum. The snare mechanism does have a little resistance when turning the wires off and on, but snaps on and off as it should and the adjustable knobs well. The calfskin heads that came on the drum were ripped and no longer useable, however upon removing them from the drum, they had a signature from 1944 on the underside which suggests this was the last time they'd been replaced! As modern heads do fit (although a little tight) I've now put a Remo Fiberskyn on the batter side and a Remo Hazy Ambassador on the snare side. With the new heads and Bibin wires, this will make a great players drum along with being a very collectable piece. I will include both the original wires and the original heads with the sale of the drum as these are part of its history.
