Description: This one-cent Postal Card (UX14) poses a mystery. Signed, "Yours, George." George says: "Shall be at the Yacht races off N.Y. tomorrow. Will be at the office of the Commissioner Providence (Rhode Island) Friday eve...Shall be on the U.S.S. Onondaga by invitation of the Treasury Dept at Washington." The Onondaga was a Monitor-Class Ironclad commissioned in 1863 and according to my research she was in France when George penned this note to Clarence Kingsberry. Therein lies the mystery. Machine cancelled with a 1901 (September?) Pan American Exposition strike. Lot includes a picture of the Onondaga from NavSourceOnline:Battleship Photo Archive and a five-page reprint from Wiki with the complete history of the ship. Buy with confidence. I am a long time collector and dealer. See my Ebay Store for other interesting items. I am Wolf Berry...The Paper Wolf. (FF-3). I received this information from a kind Ebayer: There were America's Cup Yacht Races held in NY Harbor in 1901 on Sept. 28, Oct. 3 and Oct 4. As this card appears to be cancelled on Sept. 16 it is probable that there were races for lower Yacht classes the next day. He found none of the names on the card.
