Description: This is a Wise Old Owl Barro Negro figure made of Burnished Black Clay. A lovely Mexican Folk art collectible, Handmade and Signed from Oaxaca. From San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico, this black clay wise 'ole owl sculpture figure is amazing. On our most recent trip to Mexico, we had a lovely visit with Belem Juarez. Belem is the niece of the infamous Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto or Dona Rosa and has learned the centuries old craft of Barro Negro pottery from her aunt and family. Most black clay pottery is gray and has a matte finish. It was Belem's aunt, Dona Rosa, who discovered that if the black clay was burnished or rubbed with a quartz stone, just before firing, the clay became very compacted. Then, when firing at a low temp the clay turned black and looked very shiny. This owl, handcrafted by Belem, is large and has two big sculpted eyes with radiated carvings and impressions on the edges that look like feathers. His bill is shiny with the same impressed edges and his chin has circles and deep carvings that make him look like he's smiling. His chest has two carved leaves and swirls that mimic feathers. Under his chest he has the same carvings as his chin and his feet are carved and burnished to really shine. Our favorite is his carved covert wings, long wing feathers and the tips of his ears. Belem detailed the side of each feather so that it looks very textured. The bottom is hand signed by Belem. The owl represents wisdom, independence, freedom and visions.
